Q.Who is eligible for PM Surya Ghar Yojana?
Any Indian household with own roof, valid electricity connection in applicant's name, no existing solar.
Eligibility checklist: (1) Indian citizen, age 18+, (2) own a residential rooftop (or have written authorisation from the owner), (3) electricity connection in the applicant's name, (4) no rooftop solar already installed, (5) valid bank account (for subsidy credit), (6) Aadhaar-linked mobile. There is NO income ceiling — both BPL and high-income families are eligible.
Q.Can renters / tenants apply for PM Surya Ghar?
Yes — with NOC from the rooftop owner.
Yes. Tenants can apply with a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) signed by the building owner, on plain paper or e-stamp. The electricity connection must still be in the applicant's (tenant's) name. The subsidy is credited to the applicant's bank account.
Q.Can commercial / shop owners apply for the residential subsidy?
No — residential subsidy is for domestic / household connections only.
No. The ₹78,000 PM Surya Ghar subsidy is for **residential / domestic** electricity connections only. Commercial, shop, agricultural, or industrial connections are NOT eligible under this scheme. However, separate schemes exist: PM-KUSUM for agricultural solar pumps, and commercial rooftop solar incentives via SECI/MNRE.
Q.Is there a minimum or maximum electricity bill to qualify?
No minimum/maximum — but ₹1,500+/month bills see the fastest payback.
There is no minimum or maximum bill requirement. However, the scheme is designed for households with monthly bills ≥ ₹500. Households paying ₹1,500–₹4,000/month see the best ROI: payback in 3.5–5 years and 20+ years of free electricity. Households below 300 units/month consumption rarely benefit since they already pay subsidised tariffs.
Q.What is the minimum roof area needed for PM Surya Ghar?
About 100 sq ft for 1 kW. Typical 3 kW system needs ~300 sq ft shadow-free roof.
Rule of thumb: 1 kW requires ~100 sq ft of shadow-free, south-facing roof area. So a typical 3 kW system needs ~300 sq ft. East- or west-facing roofs work too but give 10–15% less generation. Avoid roofs with afternoon shadow from trees, water tanks, or adjacent buildings.
