What is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?+

It is a central government scheme launched in February 2024 that provides up to ₹78,000 subsidy for rooftop solar installation. The scheme targets 1 crore households to receive free electricity through solar panels.

How much subsidy can I get?+

₹30,000 for 1 kW, ₹60,000 for 2 kW, and a maximum of ₹78,000 for systems 3 kW and above. The subsidy is transferred directly to your bank account after installation and net-meter verification.

Who is eligible for the PM Surya Ghar subsidy?+

Indian citizens who own a residential property with a valid electricity connection and a rooftop suitable for solar installation. The household must not have availed a similar solar subsidy before.

How do I apply?+

Register on the official portal pmsuryaghar.gov.in, upload your latest electricity bill and Aadhaar, get technical approval from your DISCOM, and choose an MNRE-empanelled vendor for installation.

What solar loans are available?+

Under PM Surya Ghar, banks like SBI (5.75%-10.15%), Bank of Baroda (7.00%-9.15%), PNB (~7.00%), Canara Bank, and Union Bank offer loans up to ₹6 Lakh for up to 10 years. Loans up to ₹2 Lakh for systems ≤3 kW are collateral-free.

Does my state offer additional subsidy?+

14 states offer additional subsidies on top of central subsidy including Rajasthan (₹17,000), Gujarat (₹10,000/kW), Delhi (₹2,000/kW + GBI), UP (₹15,000/kW), and others. See our Subsidy India page for complete list.

What is the payback period?+

Typically 4-6 years depending on your state electricity tariff and system size. After payback, you get nearly free electricity for the remaining 20+ years of the system life.
